The lay of the land
The city sits in a long valley framed by ridges, with Red Mountain and Shades Mountain rising to the south. The core is in the middle, and everything else fans out from there. The historic neighborhoods hug downtown, the established suburbs climb over the mountain to the south, and the newer growth runs out along the interstates and Highway 280.
So I split the metro into seven regions, each with its own feel. Pick the lifestyle that sounds like you, then look at the neighborhoods inside it. Every spot is tagged two ways: what it's best for, and whether you're more likely to find a move-in-ready home or one with real renovation upside. That second question is my favorite one to dig into with you.
